C&rsquo;est la distinction la plus importante \u00e0 retenir avant d&rsquo;en placer un : ce type d&rsquo;ordre prot\u00e8ge le prix, pas l&rsquo;ex\u00e9cution.<\/p><h2>Ce que dit la d\u00e9finition officielle de l&rsquo;ordre limite<\/h2><p>Selon le bulletin de l&rsquo;investisseur publi\u00e9 par la SEC, un ordre limite est un ordre d&rsquo;achat ou de vente d&rsquo;une action \u00e0 un prix pr\u00e9cis ou meilleur. Un ordre limite d&rsquo;achat ne peut \u00eatre ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 qu&rsquo;au prix limite indiqu\u00e9 ou \u00e0 un prix inf\u00e9rieur, et un ordre limite de vente ne peut \u00eatre ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 qu&rsquo;au prix limite ou \u00e0 un prix sup\u00e9rieur. La SEC pr\u00e9cise explicitement qu&rsquo;un <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investor.gov\/additional-resources\/news-alerts\/alerts-bulletins\/investor-bulletin-understanding-order-types\" rel=\"noopener\">ordre limite n&rsquo;est jamais garanti d&rsquo;\u00eatre ex\u00e9cut\u00e9<\/a> : il ne se d\u00e9clenche que si le prix du march\u00e9 atteint effectivement le prix limite fix\u00e9.<\/p><p>Cette formulation m\u00e9rite d&rsquo;\u00eatre lue deux fois. Elle ne dit pas que l&rsquo;ordre s&rsquo;ex\u00e9cutera \u00ab probablement \u00bb ou \u00ab dans la plupart des cas \u00bb : elle dit qu&rsquo;il n&rsquo;y a aucune garantie, point final. Si le march\u00e9 ne touche jamais votre prix, votre ordre reste en attente, potentiellement ind\u00e9finiment, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 annulation ou expiration selon les r\u00e8gles de votre broker.<\/p><h2>Pourquoi le bid-ask spread peut emp\u00eacher le d\u00e9clenchement<\/h2><p>Pour comprendre pourquoi un prix limite peut \u00eatre manqu\u00e9 m\u00eame si le march\u00e9 semble s&rsquo;en approcher, il faut regarder le carnet d&rsquo;ordres. Le glossaire de l&rsquo;organisme am\u00e9ricain de protection des investisseurs d\u00e9finit le bid comme le prix le plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 qu&rsquo;un acheteur est pr\u00eat \u00e0 payer \u00e0 un instant donn\u00e9, et l&rsquo;ask comme le prix le plus bas qu&rsquo;un vendeur accepte. La SEC pr\u00e9cise dans sa fiche sur le spread que <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/answers\/spread.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">l&rsquo;ask est presque toujours sup\u00e9rieur au bid<\/a>, cet \u00e9cart constituant une source de r\u00e9mun\u00e9ration pour les teneurs de march\u00e9.<\/p><p>Ce d\u00e9tail change tout pour un ordre limite d&rsquo;achat. Si vous placez un ordre limite d&rsquo;achat \u00e0 un prix situ\u00e9 entre le bid et l&rsquo;ask courants, il ne se d\u00e9clenchera que si le march\u00e9 descend jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 toucher ce niveau pr\u00e9cis, pas seulement s&rsquo;il s&rsquo;en approche visuellement sur un graphique. La d\u00e9finition du <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investor.gov\/introduction-investing\/investing-basics\/glossary\/bid-price\">prix bid<\/a> rappelle que ce prix \u00e9volue en continu : un \u00e9cart qui semble n\u00e9gligeable en apparence peut suffire \u00e0 laisser un ordre limite sans ex\u00e9cution pendant toute une s\u00e9ance.<\/p><h2>Un exemple chiffr\u00e9 fictif pour illustrer le m\u00e9canisme<\/h2><p>Voici un exemple enti\u00e8rement fictif, construit uniquement pour illustrer le raisonnement, sans lien avec un actif ou un march\u00e9 r\u00e9el. Imaginons un actif dont le bid affich\u00e9 est de 100,00 et l&rsquo;ask de 100,10, soit un spread fictif de 0,10. Un trader place un ordre limite d&rsquo;achat \u00e0 99,95, en dessous du bid courant, pour tenter d&rsquo;acheter moins cher qu&rsquo;au prix actuel du march\u00e9.<\/p><p>Dans ce sc\u00e9nario fictif, tant que le bid ne descend pas jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 99,95, l&rsquo;ordre reste en attente : le prix affich\u00e9 peut fluctuer entre 99,98 et 100,05 pendant plusieurs minutes sans jamais d\u00e9clencher l&rsquo;ex\u00e9cution, pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment parce que la d\u00e9finition de l&rsquo;ordre limite d&rsquo;achat n&rsquo;autorise une ex\u00e9cution qu&rsquo;au prix limite ou \u00e0 un prix inf\u00e9rieur. Si le march\u00e9 finit par toucher 99,95, l&rsquo;ordre peut s&rsquo;ex\u00e9cuter \u00e0 ce niveau ou \u00e0 un prix encore plus favorable, mais rien ne garantissait que ce niveau serait atteint ce jour-l\u00e0.<\/p><h2>Ce que l&rsquo;ordre limite ne couvre pas<\/h2><p>Les sources cit\u00e9es ici documentent la m\u00e9canique du prix et du spread, pas la vitesse d&rsquo;ex\u00e9cution, la liquidit\u00e9 disponible \u00e0 un niveau donn\u00e9, ni le comportement d&rsquo;un march\u00e9 lors d&rsquo;un mouvement brutal. Un ordre limite ne prot\u00e8ge pas non plus contre l&rsquo;absence totale de contrepartie si personne n&rsquo;est dispos\u00e9 \u00e0 traiter \u00e0 ce prix.
